General Summary

The Model Maker is responsible for building a broad range of miniature scale, 3-dimensional models and props required on a stop motion animated feature film utilizing unique fabrication techniques and a comprehensive understanding of materials.

Job Functions
  • Analyze model/prop drawings and reference to build to required specifications.
  • Utilize and recommend optimum materials or process for achieving each build according to technical and stylistic specifications.
  • Create appropriate, on style, masters and prep for molding process.
  • Maintain and repair models and props to ensure the quality of the film is kept intact.
  • Understand, interpret and implement the creative vision of the Production Designer and Director under the guidance of the Art Director and Head of Department.
  • Meet model and prop building duties as required within production schedules as set forth by the Art Department PM, while maintaining a high standard of quality.
  • Help in the general upkeep of the workshop.
  • Assist and prepare in the molding process when necessary.
  • 3+ years’ experience in a model shop for a stop motion production or visual effects environment (construction of models for miniatures, a plus).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of model shop, construction, prop design, tool usage, and equipment safety.
  • Ability to operate standard manual and power tools (drills, saws, sanders, etc.).
  • Strong aesthetic sense, ability to think creatively, and interpret the unique style of the film into 3D designs.
  • Detail oriented with strong spatial skills.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Experience and skills making jewelry, metal work and architecture models, a plus.
  • Experience in stop motion set dressing, a plus.

  • Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk; stand; sit; use hands to operate standard shop equipment; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk or hear both in person and by telephone. The employee must lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee works under typical shop conditions and is exposed to variable indoor temperatures. The noise level is usually moderate. In certain assignments, an employee may occasionally work near moving equipment and be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, airborne fumes and loud, prolonged noise (hearing protection required when using power tools).
